The 3 vital truths relate to our overall lifestyle and self-care:
- Positive Thinking
I know I know, you are tired of hearing that. But don’t shoot me or click away just yet. Read the next sentence.
The 1 falsehood is: positive thinking, food and exercise alone will cure you.
We all know that is wrong; positive thinking, food and exercise alone, will not cure you.
However, they will help you in your overall wellness. How much they help YOU depends on you and your body and health condition(s), but they will help.
I’m sure you’ve heard it before, from family, friends, strangers and your doctors: “if you just exercise, lose weight and think positive thoughts, you’ll be “cured”. As if those things alone are making you ill.
We all know that’s not true.
At least, that’s not entirely true, but there is some truth in that advice.
The feelings you (and I) get when you are told to “just” lose weight, exercise and change your attitude are:
- I’m not being heard.
- I’m being dismissed, without compassion, empathy or help.
- I’m not valued.
Am I right?
I hear you. I’m one of you. I really do understand.
You have daily pain, frustrations, anger and are running out of hope that anything will get better.
Let me tell you another truth:
Your health conditions may not get better; but your life can.
It is possible to find joy in life, even in the middle of never-ending struggles.
But in order for that to happen, you have to start by changing one thing.
You can change one thing, right?!
This one thing is the most critical of all. Without this one thing, the other two are most likely going to fail.
(I’ll discuss the other two vital truths (food & exercise) in another post.)
The 1st Vital Truth To Do:
Change your mind.
“Traci, what the heck does that even mean?!”
If you’re anything like me, you get into a habit of thinking and feeling overwhelm, pain, brain fog and stuck in the mire of our illness.
It’s all you can think about. You can’t see a tunnel, much less the light at the end of one.
You’ve made up your mind that this is as good as it gets.
But that’s another falsehood. Your life can get better.
You have to get to the point you are completely fed up with how your life is going, and then decide to change your mind.
Make the conscious decision – even if it’s moment by moment – to change how you think about your life.
Here’s 3 things you need to do to help shift your thinking to the positive.
- Speak Words of Affirmation. I know it seems absolutely ridiculous, but speaking – out loud – to yourself (even in front of a mirror), speaking positive, encouraging words, is a powerful practice. If no one else in your life is speaking words of affirmation to you, then you do it! Remember the scene in the movie The Help. You is Kind. You is Smart. You is Important. Those are fantastic words of affirmation.
- Practice Self Care. Taking a shower, combing your hair, brushing your teeth, getting dressed (even if it’s fresh pj’s), get some sunshine, get plenty of sleep, take your medication on time, start a new hobby (or get back to an old one), journal your feelings. All these are a few examples of self-care.
- Change Your Circle of Influence. If you have people speaking words of negativity and doubt to you all day, then you need to surround yourself with new people! No one can thrive in a vacuum of negativity.
The above is called Self-Care 101.
This process is only step one, there are two more. Step one is the most critical. Nothing else in your life will change, if you don’t change your mind.
Control what you can.
How you think about your life – is something you can change.
Making this change isn’t going to be easy. I know you’re sick of how your life has been going so far, so let’s work together to help you make the change to positive thinking.
Adjusting your mindset to one of positivity will help reduce mental stress, and it can give you hope that your life can get better, even if your body doesn’t.
